Spaniards Discover the San Francisco Bay! And what took them so darned long?
The San Francisco Bay evaded the eyes of 17th Century European Explorers, who combed California's Coast in search of just such ports for colonization. Numerous Spanish and Portuguese Explorers failed to notice the tiny slot in a rocky headland, that forms the mouth of San Francisco Bay, known today as the Golden Gate. Sir Francis Drake, the most renowned of Explorers at that time, missed it entirely. The bay was actually "discovered" on an Overland journey of exploration and land grabbing. |
