| HUNT #1 |
YES! U R HOT The Ohlone hunted and gathered quite industrially amid an agricultural eden. Of the below highlighted food sources, one alone is the key to your current quest.
Small mammals, like squirrels, rabbit and fox, the little rascals, were all too easy to capture and so fell prey quite frequently to the "savages". Larger mammals like Grizzleys (HELLO!!), Deer and Elk also found their way into the stomachs of our native counterparts. "These people were happy as clams" Fish and Shellfish were jumping from the waters, well not really, but they were quite abundant owing no doubt to a lack of "advanced" fishing vessels and techniques. These sea creatures contributed a significant part to the Ohlone diet. Birds, both large and small were also a part of the Ohlone food regime, including Eagles, Great Blue Herons and Owls. Of all this varied foodstuff, there is yet the most important of all: Acorns. These tough, tannin-filled, little buggars were the staple of the Ohlone diet. De-shelled, soaked and thoroughly pounded and/or ground, the acorns became a prized mush, edible raw or cookable as in cooked acorn mush cakes....yummy! Actually the Ohlone practiced an extremely advanced method of processing Acorns, involving many steps, special mixes and custom baskets for each stage. |
